What to do in a Crisis - Starting and Stopping!

In business, having a crisis is commonplace. Learning to navigate, circumvent and overcome them is a skill every leader needs to learn. Working with them and through them is key if you are to survive. The 2020 pandemic has taught us a few things:
1) We don’t need to be face to face to continue business
2) Quick (and often tough) decision making provides clarity in the face of uncertainty
3) Those that respond to the changes and adapt quickly will survive
4) Compassionate leadership will help make the right decision for the company and staff
5) Listening to others and communicating with staff, customers and suppliers is key
6) Investing in your network and community pays dividends
7) Resilience and action focus overcomes apathy and can be transformational
Clearly, much has been learned by individual business owners, probably no more so than the ability to implement ideas quickly and action longer term plans in an incredibly shorter period of time.
Indeed, rapid actions have undoubtedly ensured that many businesses survived. However, business owners now face another type of decision-making: what to stop, what to start and what to continue.
During a crisis, we implement things to help us get through but now we need to STOP. We implement other things that turned out to be (sometimes surprisingly) very good and we’d like to AMPLIFY as we come out of the crisis. We often find that there are things we have stopped that we realise we should never restart as it is no longer fit for purpose, we just need to LET GO. Finally, there are things that we may be worrying about that we urgently need to RE-START.
Businesses that survive a crisis also have to adapt post crisis and embed new processes into the ‘norm’ of the new business as usual. This is the next big test: how to ensure the new practices are adopted or quashed quickly; or the old practices are stopped for good or re-established.
